“To lose the plot”

United Kingdom

This idiom can be used to say that someone has become confused or gone crazy. The origin of the phrase is unknown, but it clearly refers to films, books, plays, operas, and similar works with a story. If you don’t understand what is happening in a story, then you will be confused about why the events are unfolding in a certain way. This can also apply to situations in our lives.
