Extra: Ireland and Scotland

Das neue Themenheft für den Englischunterricht bedient die Lehrplanthemen Irland und Schottland und ist somit in der Mittelstufe und auch in der gymnasialen Oberstufe einsetzbar.

Lerner und Leser werden anhand von z.T. sehr persönlichen Texten durch diese beiden wunderbaren Länder geführt und bereisen die Hauptstädte Dublin und Edinburgh sowie die wilde Atlantikküste oder mittelalterliche Burgen und Schlösser im Landesinnern. Aber auch politischen Themen wie dem Nordirland-Konflikt, der Unabhängigkeit Schottlands im Zuge der Brexit-Verhandlungen oder der Homosexuellen-Ehe wird Rechnung getragen. Und natürlich dürfen Themen wie Halloween in den beiden Ländern nicht fehlen und eine unerschrockene Piratin lehrt den Lerner das Fürchten und belegt eindrucksvoll, dass auch Frauen im Mittelalter ihren Mann stehen konnten!

Ireland said ‚yes‘ to gay marriage

A big majority was in favour of same­sex marriage – influence of the Catholic church has declined, writes Moya Irvine.

1 The republic of Ireland became the first country to legalise same­sex marriage through a referendum. On 22 May 2015 more than 62 per cent voted in favour of allowing gay couples to marry. The vote showed how much Ireland has changed in the last few decades. Up until 1993, homo­sexual acts were illegal in the republic.

2 Thousands of people stood in the spring sunshine out­side Dublin Castle where the votes were counted and cel­ebrated the victory for same­sex marriage. Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s first openly gay Taoiseach, said at the time that the campaign for gay marriage was ‘almost like a social revo­lution’. Enda Kenny, who was Taoiseach when the referen­dum took place said that with the vote, ‘We have disclosed who we are. We are a generous, compassionate, bold, and joyful people who say yes to inclusion, yes to generosity, yes to love, yes to gay marriage.’ One gay couple told a journal­ist from the Irish Times: ‘It means we’re the same as every­body else. We are now officially part of Ireland.’

3 There was a high turnout of 61 per cent for the referen­dum, with thousands returning from abroad to cast their votes. Only one of the country’s 43 constituencies voted against same sex­marriage. And just three of the 166 mem­bers of the Irish parliament supported the ‘no’ campaign. 

4 The chief supporter of the ‘no’ campaign was the Catho­lic church in Ireland, which upheld the traditional view of the family: a husband, a wife, and children. (…)
