70 years of Read On: from Prince Charles to King Charles III in the May issue
Man sieht es ihr nicht an, aber die Read On wird dieses Jahr 70! Dieses Jubiläum nehmen wir zum Anlass, auf die vergangenen sieben Jahrzehnte zurückzublicken. Dazu stöbern wir in unseren Archiven und veröffentlichen jeden Monat im Jahr 2023 einen Artikel aus einer Read-On-Ausgabe der letzten 70 Jahre. Da die Read On aber noch lange nicht old school ist, gibt es dazu einen frischen, neuen Blick auf das Thema aus dem Hier und Jetzt – ganz new school. In der aktuellen Ausgabe der Read On geht es um die Schul- und Studienzeit und natürlich die Krönung des britischen Königs Charles III, die am 06. Mai stattfindet. Prince Charles is 8 years old. He is the first heir to the British throne that goes to school with his classmates of the middle-class. In the preparatory school in Knightsbridge he has lessons in English, French, Latin, arithmetic, history, geography, scripture, and art.

Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, will be 19 on November 14. Under royal law, he has been an adult since his 18th birthday. As an adult, he gets an annual private income and is entitled to have a valet and a secretary. Officially of age, he will have more princely duties. He has become one of six counsellors of state – members of the royal family who act for the Queen in Privy Councils when she is absent.

The coronation of Charles III

On May 6, the new King of the United Kingdom will be crowned.

1 On May 6, King Charles III’s coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey in London. His wife, Camilla, will also be crowned. Her title was Queen Consort at first but is now officially Queen. Charles automatically became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died on September 8, 2022. This means he wouldn’t actually need to be crowned to be king, but a coronation is still an important symbolic ceremony. And it’s sure to attract a lot of attention.
2 Around 2,000 guests are likely to be there, among them heads of state and royals from around the world. The coronation will also be broadcast live, with millions around the world expected to watch it.
3 On the day, the King and Queen will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in what is called the King’s Procession. Coronations have taken place at Westminster Abbey since 1066. Charles will be the 40th monarch to be crowned there.
