If a Kiwi says “get off the grass!” to you, it probably has nothing to do with gardens or lawns. In New Zealand, “get off the grass” is a way of expressing surprise or disbelief as well as saying “you must be joking!” The phrase “get off” has many meanings, but the one used here means to remove oneself from something, like getting off a train or plane, for example.
