“To  throw or receive a googly”

The word “googly” comes from the sport cricket. A googly refers to throwing (or bowling) the ball in such a way that it spins differently than what the batsman expects. Bowling the ball with a spin will make it harder for the batsman to predict how the ball will react when it is hit. If you throw someone a googly, it means that you surprised them with an unexpected situation.
