70 years of Read On: Mars missions in the July issue

Man sieht es ihr nicht an, aber die Read On wird dieses Jahr 70! Dieses Jubiläum nehmen wir zum Anlass, auf die vergangenen sieben Jahrzehnte zurückzublicken. Dazu stöbern wir in unseren Archiven und veröffentlichen jeden Monat im Jahr 2023 einen Artikel aus einer Read-On-Ausgabe der letzten 70 Jahre. Da die Read On aber noch lange nicht old school ist, gibt es dazu einen frischen, neuen Blick auf das Thema aus dem Hier und Jetzt – ganz new school. Die aktuelle Ausgabe der Read On beschäftigt sich mit Missionen zum Mars: als unbemannte Forschungssonde in den 1970er-Jahren und als Simulation auf der Erde in drei Testläufen ab diesem Jahr.

OLD SCHOOL (1975)

Viking expedition to Mars

1                 Long ago, the old Vikings set out to discover new lands, or to revisit vaguely known countries and find out more about them. On August 20, 1975, a new Viking set out from our Earth on its way to Mars, to find out more about our neighbour planet.

2                 In the 1890s, the American astronomer Percival Lowell put forward a theory that the strange markings visible on Mars were canals, built by the inhabitants as a last desperate attempt to irrigate their dry and dying world. Nobody now thinks it likely that there are or were intelligent Martians, but many experts consider it possible that the planet might have some very elementary forms of life. They base this theory on evidence from a number of spacecraft that have orbited round or flown past the red planet.

3                 The latest explorer to be sent to Mars is an unmanned spacecraft named Viking. Originally scheduled to send a capsule down onto the surface of Mars on July 4, 1976 – the bicentenary of the United States of America – Viking was delayed in starting by technical difficulties. But if all goes well, it will go into orbit around Mars in June, 1976, for two week’s observation of the planet, and in July will send down a small capsule to the surface.

Martians for a year

NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars in the future, but it wants to test what life might be like on the Red Planet first.

1                 To prepare for future missions to Mars, NASA has built a 160-square-metre Mars simulation in its Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Without having to leave Earth, volunteers can test what living on another planet feels like.

2                 The simulated Mars habitat, called Mars Dune Alpha, has bedrooms, a kitchen, work areas for scientific research, an area for relaxing – including board games and a TV – as well as a vertical farm so the crew can grow their own food.

3                 To find out how astronauts would handle the physical and mental challenges of future missions to the Red Planet, NASA will do three one-year experiments, with the last one starting in 2026.

4                 The four volunteers for this year’s test mission moved into their Martian home in June. While there, they will collect data, do experiments, work on equipment and build infrastructure.
