Christmassy idioms

Plätzchenduft, Gemütlichkeit und Kerzenschein – die schönste Zeit des Jahres hat begonnen! Um diese ganz besondere Weihnachtsstimmung einzufangen, kann man im Englischen auf einige Redewendungen zurückgreifen. Ein paar davon finden Sie in diesem Auszug aus der aktuellen Ausgabe der Read On. In einigen Beispielsätzen können Sie die Redewendungen auch gleich anwenden.

1                 All of these idioms have something to do with Christmas. After reading them, take the quiz below.

2                 ‘Tis the season comes from the lyrics of the popular Christmas carol “Deck the Halls”. ‘Tis the season is another of way of saying that Christmastime is a festive time of year. (‘Tis = it is).

3                 Christmas comes but once a year means that Christmas is the right time to be generous and indulge others, and perhaps yourself, too.

4                 To get into the holiday spirit means to have a good feeling about Christmas and the days around it.

5                 Christmas came early (this year) can be said when something good happens, especially if it was unexpected.
