1 For thousands of years, Native Americans lived in North America, and it remained mostly unknown to Europeans. Then, in the 1500s, Europeans began to settle there.
2 The French mostly went north, into what is now Canada; the Spanish mostly to the south and west, now mostly Mexico; and the British into what is now the East Coast of the US.
3 British settlers came for different reasons. Some came to do business and to make money, whilst others wanted religious freedom that they were unable to have in England.
4 It was King James I of England who began to officially colonise the American east coast for the British. He wanted to compete with Spain, which had had success in finding gold and other resources in the New World.
5 In 1606, King James I granted a charter for a group of investors to establish Jamestown, in what is now the state of Virginia.
6 It was the first permanent English settlement in North America. However, things didn’t go very well.
