Recipe: Baked beans

Baked beans

Ingredients for 4–6 servings

  • 360 g small dried beans
  • 260 g bacon, diced
  • 600g yellow onion, diced
  • 10g garlic, minced
  • 45g molasses
  • 165g prepared tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 85g brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions: Soak the beans overnight. Cook until tender and set aside. Sauté bacon until fat is rendered, and bacon is slightly crisp. Add onions and garlic, and sauté until golden. Stir bacon and onion mixture into beans. Add remaining ingredients, stir to combine. Place mixture in a tightly lidded oven-safe pot, and bake in a low oven (150°C) for 2.5 hours. The beans should be tender, and the sauce syrupy.
