The Declaration of Independence

On July 4, 1776, members of America’s Continental Congress adopted a historic document that laid the foundations for the USA.

1                 On April 28, King Charles III spoke before the US Congress congratulating all Americans on deciding to become a free country 250 years earlier.

2                 “[They] united 13 disparate colonies to forge a nation on the revolutionary idea of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ ”, he told his audience in the House of Representatives at Washington’s Capitol.

3                 The British king was, of course, talking about the Declaration of Independence of 1776. This declaration lists all the reasons why the colonies wanted to break away from Britain. At the same time, it defines what it means to be a free American citizen and what a good government should do for the people.

4                 This groundbreaking legal document builds on several much older legal principles that were already a part of British law but takes them to another level.

5                 Simply put, it championed the idea that all men are created equal. This was seen as a revolutionary idea at a time when most countries were still ruled by kings and queens. In the end, it moved the entire western world one step closer to democracy.

6                 The Declaration of Independence has a long and complex backstory.
