‘‘What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”

American English / British English

The British would say, “What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.” A goose is female, and a gander is male. In a culinary sense, a goose or a gander will be equally tasty regardless of which sauce is used. This British form of this expression has likely been around since the late 17th century. We use both expressions to say that all people should be treated equally and allowed to do and have the same things.
